In the tranquil vistas of Kumaon, lies a sacred temple of Nanda Devi, an incarnation of the Hindu Goddess Durga. This holy shrine is located in the heart of Almora city. Many Hindu pilgrims religiously visit this temple as Nanda Devi is considered to be the "Destroyer of Evil" and the saviour of the denizens of Kumaon as well as other regions of Uttarakhand. 

This temple is believed to be almost 1,000 years old and was dedicated to Goddess Nanda by the kings of the Chand dynasty. Situated in the premises of a Shiva temple, the Nanda Devi Temple features a magnificent monument decorated with a stone amalaka or crown.

The patron goddess of the Chand dynasty, the divinity is believed to be the savior of the residents of Kumaon with other parts of Uttarakhand. Throughout this festival, the divinity in the form a sheep is decorated with different jeweler and along with food and clothing she is sent to her other home at Trishul Peak followed by a majestic procession. Musical folk song and dance make this celebration surprising.
